Deck the Halls

Today I'm linking up with Kelly's Korner - Christmas Tour of Homes.

We've had fun getting the house ready for Christmas this year. We decorated our first two (?!) Christmas' at the apartment, but we were working in a small space, so it really stifled my creativity. Let's be honest. Pinterest wasn't around.

This is the stairway when you first walk in. This project was super easy, once I stole the idea from a friend and found the greenery I wanted. We have worn out Hobby Lobby since Thanksgiving.

 Close up. These are tied together with florist wire, which is covered with the wired lime green ribbon. I think you could add some twigs and lose the ornaments and keep these up through January, if your heart desired.

 
The tree. I love the bright colors. We have a lot of white and gray in our house, so it's nice to have some pops of color through the holidays.

Namath approves...we think. He's really fascinated with the Eiffel Tower ornament. He's European like that.

 

One of our Christmas platters on display. Our dining room table is set with our  Christmas dishes, which naturally, I didn't take a picture of. It's Mandy Bagwell Simply Christmas.

I don't know how people decorated pre-YouTube and Pinterest. Or spray paint. This post might as well be called, "How to Decorate with Spray Paint."

This little project was a labor of love to get it just right. I went through enough silver spray paint to stage a Lady GaGa concert. In the end, I was pleased with the result.

Since I had all that silver spray paint, back to Pinterest I went. Sadly, I was lacking empty wine bottles - which seems impossible. But, in the spirit of Christmas, I managed to come up with two more.

I was trying to recreate the bottle in the front that I had seen and loved. So, when I got it as a housewarming gift literally the day after completing this project, well, it just thrilled my soul.

The full mantle. My mom decorated these ornament balls with, you guessed it, spray paint. We've got a few variations of silver going on, but I'm telling my OCD self that variety is the spice of life, so as not to end up painting. Again.

Once all the decorations are up, it's time to head over to the bar.

 If you're lucky, you'll find some of Martha's eggnog. Just a little bit, because this is serious stuff.

We came away with this ornament at a dirty Santa swap two years ago. I love it, and had to find a place besides the tree to display it.

No matter how pitiful the face, or what that ornament says, you don't have to share.

Like most people, Christmas cards are one of my favorite part of Christmas. I used that same green ribbon from the stairway, secured it to the pantry door and voila, Christmas card display.

Is there anything better than sitting by the Christmas tree at night?

Patriotic, Part III

I hope you're feeling patriotic, because this series continues. We covered a lot of ground in DC.

Speaking of grounds, on our third day, we took the Metro to Arlington. 
 

  One of my favorite things was JFK's grave site.

 Loved the view. Before JFK's death, he visited the spot and commented to a friend that he could, "stay here forever."
 

 The inscription on the grave of his inauguration speech was beautiful.

It truly set the tone for the walk through the rest of the cemetery. 

 We made our way over to the tomb of the unknown solider for the changing of the guard.

Beautiful day at Arlington, and so humbling to take in the visual reminders of the sacrifice of life as far as you could see in every direction.

Patriotic, Part II

 One of my favorite things to do on vacation, if possible, is to go on a run. Especially if its possible to do some sight seeing along the way. Another favorite is to sleep in and eat omelets, but for the sake of balance, we did both.

  It was a little overcast, but still a great run around the mall to see the monuments.

 We took a quick look at the Lincoln Memorial....we did a full visit of the monuments a couple of days later.

 After breakfast and a much needed shower, we headed to the American History Museum.

 I did not need an exhibit to tell me I wouldn't be good at hand washing clothes.

 This exhibit took one house and followed the different families that have lived there through different eras of American history. I thought it was such a clever idea.

 Learning about the rationing and canning during WWII was so interesting to me. There would be none of this.

Speaking of conserving, no one said it was easy being green...

 That night we took a trip to Chinatown.

Patriotic, Part One

 I think it counts if I blog about this trip the month it actually happened, right? Right.

A couple weeks ago we headed up to our nation's capitol to take in the sights, and do a little learning about  history. I'm not sure exactly what made us pick DC, other than I remember enjoying it in 5th grade. Typing it out, doesn't seem like the best way to pick a vacation, but we had a blast.

This greeted us on day one on our walk to the Smithsonian. I loved how you could see the Washington monument from virtually anywhere in the city. Made me want to break out into patriotic song. 

 We left the patriotic music to Lee Greenwood, and headed to the Air and Space Museum.

  Not pictured: We loved the TVs that had satellite photos of the Olympic Stadium being built over the past ten years, the changing of the seasons, etc. It blows my pea brained mind that people are smart enough to invent such things.

Moving on....

 I didn't pass this test. I'm too tall, old, apparently overweight and married. What was happening on these flights?

 Lucy flew! Back when flying was glamorous, cost a billion dollars, your liquids didn't have to go in 3 oz. containers and you could smoke on the plane. Those were the days.

 After lunch, we headed to the Museum of Natural History. You know I couldn't resist a picture that speaks to my Alabama heart.

This wasn't my favorite stop. But, we did do a little Christmas shopping. Hope diamond anyone? Beautiful. Even though the name sounds like something advertised in a Kay jewelers ad.

  Before we headed out, we watched the world's population tick up alarmingly fast. Good news for Brad and Angelina.

That concluded Day One.

 Not pictured: the best crab cake I've ever had. Our table was super close to the people next to us, and I could not bring myself to be that girl, taking pictures of my dinner like I had never eaten before. Which clearly isn't true, because the Smithsonian told me just that morning I was overweight.

Thankful

I have a few fun posts in the works, but today, and this week, I just feel thankful. Thankful that we serve a God that often spares us from the things we deserve, and blesses us with things we often don't.

 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us,  to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever!

Ephesians 3:20-21
